Next Generation Managed Network Monitoring Service

ControlPoint Monitor Requirements

Hardware Requirements:

  • CPU:   Minimum requirement: Any processor newer than 2008.  Recommended:  Any Dual-Core processor or better.  ControlPoint Monitor supports native x86 architectures.
  • RAM:   Minimum requirement: 1024 MB RAM. Recommended: 2048 MB RAM.
  • Hard Disk:   You will need approximately 1 Gigabyte of free hard disk space. The actual software and service that is installed has a very small footprint but logfiles and temporary data storage when disconnected from the ControlPoint Monitoring CORE server will also require additional space.

Software Requirements:

The 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the following operating systems are officially supported for ControlPoint Monitor Probe Agents (Intel x86/x64 architectures only):
  • Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or later
  • Microsoft Windows Vista*
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008*
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows 8
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012
* For performance reasons, we recommend to not use Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 R1.  If you must use Windows Server 2008 R1 we strongly recommend installing Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Virtualization Requirements:

Following is a list of Virtualization technologies and OS versions that are supported by ControlPoint Monitor Probe Agents:

Virtual Host Technology Client OS
VMware ESX/ESXi versions 3.5, 4.x, or 5.x Windows XP, Windows 2003 SP1 or later (32/64 bit), Windows Vista (32/64 bit), Windows 2008 (32/64 bit), Windows 7 (32/64 bit)
VMware Server 2.0 Windows XP, Windows 2003 SP1 or later (32/64 bit), Windows 2008
XEN Server 5.0 Windows XP, Windows 2003 SP1 or later (32/64 bit), Windows 2008
Parallels Virtuozzo Containers Windows 2003 Server SP1 or later (32/64 bit), Windows 2008 Server

Firewall Requirements:

The ControlPoint Monitoring Probe Service will connect externally to the LANAIR colocation using the below identified IP address range and specific port number.  The Probe Service will initiate this connection, after which an encrypted SSL tunnel is established between the CORE and the Probe to keep all data invisible to data packet captures.

  • Destination IP Range:
  • Destination TCP/UDP Port:  23560

Additional Considerations:
  1. CPU utilization due to the Probe Agent service is minimal; however, other processes running on the host server or workstation may cause heavy processor utilization and therefore false alarms may be generated due to this high CPU utilization.  A server or workstation that does not typically experience greater than 50% CPU load is a good candidate.
  2. Any server or workstation hosting a Probe Agent should not be restarted frequently or false alarms may be generated indicating that the site or agent is offline.  All maintenance windows must be identified to ControlPoint Monitor Help Desk ( during business hours the day of the maintenance to be completed so that a scheduled maintenance window can be identified to prevent false alarms.
  3. Some sensor types need the Microsoft .NET Framework to be installed. We recommend you provide Microsoft .NET Framework versions 3.5 and 4.0 (with latest updates) on all systems running a Probe Agent (version 4.0 is needed, e.g., for monitoring VMware or XenServer virtual environments.)
  4. Firewall permissions must be configured from each site hosting a Probe Agent to allow connectivity to the ControlPoint Monitor CORE server
